Released in November 1973, it was the first solo project by Lee, who had achieved international success through his leadership of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blues_rock\">blues rock<\/a>\u00a0band\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ten_Years_After\">Ten Years After<\/a>. The album was recorded at Lee&#8217;s home studio in south Oxfordshire, which he and LeFevre built especially for the project. The guest musicians at the sessions included\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Harrison\">George Harrison<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Winwood\">Steve Winwood<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Capaldi\">Jim Capaldi<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Wood\">Ron Wood<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mick_Fleetwood\">Mick Fleetwood<\/a>. &#8220;Fallen Angel&#8221; and the Harrison-composed &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/So_Sad_(No_Love_of_His_Own)\">So Sad (No Love of His Own)<\/a>&#8221; were issued as singles from the album.<br><em>On the Road to Freedom<\/em>\u00a0was well received by music critics, although Lee&#8217;s more subtle guitar playing and new musical direction were not welcomed by fans of Ten Years After.
